Gujarat’s Valsad Records India’s Third-Highest 24-Hour Rainfall, Massive Flooding Triggers Rescue Operations
South Gujarat’s Valsad district has witnessed one of the most extraordinary rainfall events in India’s recorded meteorological history, with Umargam taluka receiving 1,064 mm of rain in just 24 hours, making it the third-highest daily rainfall ever recorded in the country. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) data, only Sohra (Cherrapunji) in Meghalaya, which recorded 1,563.3 mm in 1995, and Aminidivi in Lakshadweep, which received 1,168.5 mm in 2004, have registered higher single-day rainfall totals.
The unprecedented cloudburst-like rainfall inundated vast parts of Valsad district, particularly Umargam and Vapi, where roads turned into rivers, residential colonies were submerged, and vehicles were swept away or left stranded in waist-deep water. Viral videos circulating online showed entire parking lots underwater, highlighting the scale of flooding that brought normal life to a standstill.
The torrential downpour caused rivers across South Gujarat to overflow, prompting district authorities to launch large-scale rescue and evacuation operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire services, and local administration worked through the night to evacuate residents trapped in flooded homes and low-lying areas. More than 1,200 people were rescued, while hundreds of others were shifted to safer locations as water levels continued to rise.
The heavy rainfall also disrupted transportation and essential services across the region. Several highways were submerged, rail traffic experienced delays, and power supply was interrupted in multiple localities as authorities disconnected electricity in waterlogged areas to prevent accidents. Educational institutions in several districts, including Vadodara and Dahod, were ordered to remain closed as a precaution against continuing adverse weather.
The India Meteorological Department has attributed the extreme rainfall to an exceptionally active southwest monsoon system over western India and has issued a red alert for parts of Gujarat, warning of continued extremely heavy rainfall, flash floods, and localized landslides. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow evacuation instructions issued by local authorities.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has been closely monitoring the evolving situation and directed district administrations to prioritize rescue, relief, and restoration efforts. Emergency teams remain on high alert, while damage assessment is expected to begin once floodwaters recede. Initial reports indicate extensive losses to homes, businesses, agricultural fields, and public infrastructure across the affected region.
Meteorologists say the record-breaking rainfall underscores the growing frequency of extreme weather events linked to an increasingly volatile monsoon. Experts have called for enhanced urban drainage systems, improved flood forecasting, and climate-resilient infrastructure to reduce the impact of such high-intensity rainfall episodes, which are becoming more common across India’s coastal and western regions.
