Ravneet Singh Bittu Resigns from Union Council of Ministers After Rajya Sabha Tenure Ends; BJP Eyes Bigger Punjab Role
Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers after the completion of his Rajya Sabha tenure, marking a significant political development ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. President Droupadi Murmu accepted his resignation with immediate effect on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
Bittu confirmed that he had submitted his resignation after his Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21, stating that he met Prime Minister Modi before the resignation was formally accepted. In a public message, he expressed gratitude to the President and the Prime Minister for giving him the opportunity to serve the nation as a Union Minister.
The resignation has triggered widespread political speculation, particularly because no immediate replacement has been announced. While the government has not officially cited a reason for Bittu’s exit, multiple reports indicate that the BJP is preparing to assign him a larger organisational and electoral role in Punjab, where Assembly elections are due next year.
Political observers believe the move reflects the BJP’s strategy to strengthen its leadership in Punjab. Bittu, a prominent Sikh leader and grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, joined the BJP in 2024 after leaving the Congress and quickly emerged as one of the party’s most visible faces in the state. His elevation to the Union Council of Ministers was viewed as part of the BJP’s effort to expand its appeal among Punjab’s electorate.
During his tenure as Minister of State, Bittu handled responsibilities relating to the Railways and Food Processing Industries portfolios. He frequently represented the government on infrastructure development, railway modernisation, and initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s food processing sector. His resignation now creates a vacancy in the Council of Ministers that may be filled in a future Cabinet reshuffle.
Sources within the BJP suggest that Bittu is likely to play a key role in the party’s preparations for the Punjab Assembly elections. Some reports indicate he could be entrusted with leading the BJP’s campaign in the state or contest an Assembly seat himself as the party attempts to expand its political footprint against the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and other regional rivals.
