What is E20 Janta Party? Viral Campaign Demands Nitin Gadkari’s Resignation

A new online movement calling itself the E20 Janta Party (EJP) has gone viral across India, emerging just days after the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) ended its nationwide protest over the NEET controversy. Unlike a registered political party, the E20 Janta Party describes itself as a citizen-led digital campaign focused on fuel policy, consumer rights and government accountability. The movement has gained rapid traction on social media, where thousands of users are sharing memes, videos and campaign material supporting its demands.

The campaign’s central demand is that the government should allow motorists to choose between 100% petrol and E20 (20% ethanol-blended) petrol instead of making E20 the dominant fuel available across the country. Supporters argue that while ethanol blending may have environmental and energy-security benefits, consumers should retain the freedom to select the fuel best suited to their vehicles.

The movement has also launched a campaign against Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who has been one of the strongest advocates of ethanol-blended fuel in India. Campaign organisers accuse the government of pushing the E20 programme without adequately addressing public concerns over mileage, engine compatibility, maintenance costs and long-term effects on older vehicles. As a result, the group has publicly demanded Gadkari’s resignation and announced plans for online and offline protests.

Apart from seeking political accountability, the E20 Janta Party has called for greater transparency in the implementation of India’s ethanol policy. It wants petrol pumps to clearly label fuel blends, the publication of independent scientific studies on the impact of E20 on different vehicle types, and the continued availability of pure petrol for consumers who prefer it. The campaign says its objective is not to oppose biofuels outright but to ensure informed consumer choice.

The government, however, has consistently defended the E20 programme, stating that ethanol blending is a key part of India’s strategy to reduce crude oil imports, improve energy security, lower emissions and increase farmers’ income through ethanol production. Officials maintain that newer vehicles are designed to operate safely on E20 fuel and have not indicated any plans to reverse the nationwide rollout.

The rapid rise of the E20 Janta Party reflects the growing influence of youth-led, social media-driven activism in India. Following the visibility achieved by the CJP movement, issue-based online campaigns are increasingly shaping public debate and drawing national attention to policy decisions. Whether the E20 Janta Party develops into a sustained public movement or remains primarily a digital pressure group will depend on public participation and the government’s response in the weeks ahead.
