CJP Accuses Government of Breaching Promises, Warns of Fresh Nationwide Protests
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has accused the Central Government of reneging on commitments made during negotiations that led to the suspension of its nationwide agitation, warning that protests could resume if the assurances are not implemented immediately. The development marks a fresh escalation in tensions only days after both sides announced a breakthrough following weeks of demonstrations over examination reforms and police action against protesters.
According to CJP leaders, the agreement reached on July 25 included the withdrawal of all FIRs filed against protesters, an assurance that no fresh criminal cases would be registered, protection from further police action, and the release of detained demonstrators. The organisation also claims the Centre agreed to issue a written copy of the commitments, but alleges that the promised document has yet to be delivered.
Speaking at a press conference, CJP spokespersons alleged that hundreds of students and volunteers have continued to face arrests, surveillance, detentions and harassment in states including Bihar, West Bengal and Delhi despite the understanding reached with Union ministers. The organisation argues that these actions directly contradict the assurances that persuaded it to suspend its 49-day protest campaign.
CJP has now issued an ultimatum to the Centre, stating that unless all pending cases against protesters are withdrawn and the written agreement is handed over without delay, it will be compelled to relaunch nationwide demonstrations. The group says the movement was paused—not ended—and that the government must fulfil every commitment before the agitation can be considered resolved.
Beyond the immediate demand for withdrawal of legal cases, the organisation has reiterated its broader agenda. It is seeking comprehensive reforms to India’s examination system, accountability for those responsible for examination paper leaks, compensation for families affected by the crisis, and legal protection for students who participated in peaceful protests. CJP leaders maintain that these reforms remain central to their campaign.
The warning comes after the protest movement achieved a significant political breakthrough, culminating in the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the Centre’s announcement of major examination reforms. Those developments were widely viewed as one of the government’s biggest concessions to a youth-led movement in recent years. However, the latest dispute over the implementation of the agreement threatens to undermine that progress and revive nationwide unrest.
Meanwhile, senior advocate and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal, who has extended legal support to the movement, said a nationwide legal assistance network is being organised to defend students facing criminal proceedings. CJP has also announced mechanisms to document alleged police excesses and provide legal aid to those arrested during or after the protests.
The Centre has not publicly responded in detail to each allegation made by CJP. With the organisation insisting that it is awaiting concrete implementation rather than verbal assurances, the coming days are expected to determine whether negotiations continue or the country witnesses a renewed phase of student-led protests.
