MCC Introduces Major Changes for NEET UG 2026 Counselling: Seat Upgrades, Online Resignation and NRI Quota Simplified
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has announced a series of reforms to the NEET UG 2026 counselling process, aimed at making admissions more transparent, efficient and student-friendly. The changes digitise several key procedures, reducing the need for repeated travel and paperwork for lakhs of medical aspirants participating in the All India Quota (AIQ) counselling.
One of the most significant changes relates to seat upgradation. Under the revised system, candidates who have already joined an allotted college and opt for an upgrade in subsequent counselling rounds will no longer be required to physically report to the existing college. Once a higher-preference seat is allotted, the transfer process will be handled online, eliminating multiple campus visits and reducing logistical difficulties for students and their families.
The MCC has also introduced an online seat resignation facility. Earlier, candidates wishing to surrender an allotted seat had to visit the institution in person and complete the formalities. From this year, resignations can be submitted through the MCC counselling portal, creating a digital record while making the process faster and more transparent.
Another major reform benefits candidates applying under the NRI quota in deemed universities. Applicants can now upload all required NRI documents directly on the MCC portal for verification instead of completing separate offline verification procedures. The change is expected to simplify admissions for overseas Indian candidates and reduce delays in document scrutiny.
To support the rollout of the new system, the Union Health Ministry and MCC have conducted training programmes for state counselling authorities, medical colleges and participating institutions. States have also been advised to publish detailed seat matrices, fee structures and admission information, enabling candidates to make informed choices during every counselling round.
The reforms are part of a broader effort to modernise the counselling process. The government has also announced one-time physical reporting, expanded digital document verification, improved facilities for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) and stronger cybersecurity measures to safeguard candidate data. These initiatives are intended to make the admission process more secure, accessible and efficient.
According to the MCC, counselling for 15% All India Quota seats, central universities, deemed universities, ESIC institutions and AFMC is expected to commence around August 7, 2026, although the detailed schedule is yet to be released. Candidates have been advised to regularly check the official MCC counselling portal for notifications, seat matrices and round-wise schedules.
These reforms are expected to significantly reduce travel, paperwork and administrative delays while ensuring a more transparent and technology-driven counselling process for NEET UG 2026 aspirants.
