Assam Flood Crisis Deepens as Overnight Rains Trigger Fresh Inundation Fears
Assam’s flood situation has turned increasingly critical after heavy overnight rainfall raised fears of fresh inundation across several districts. Rising river levels and renewed downpours have hampered relief operations, with authorities warning that low-lying areas remain vulnerable to another wave of flooding. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall, prompting officials to maintain a high level of preparedness.
The disaster has already claimed 95 lives during this year’s monsoon season, while thousands of families continue to face displacement. State authorities have placed 14 districts on high alert as floodwaters threaten additional villages, agricultural land, and transport infrastructure. Rescue teams remain deployed in the worst-affected regions to evacuate stranded residents and provide emergency assistance.
Fresh rainfall has caused water levels in the Brahmaputra and several of its tributaries to rise again, increasing the likelihood of breaches in embankments and renewed flooding in areas that had only recently begun to recover. Roads, schools, government offices, and public utilities have been affected in several districts, disrupting normal life and delaying rehabilitation efforts.
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda is scheduled to visit the flood-hit areas to assess the situation and review relief and rehabilitation measures with state officials. The visit comes as the Centre and the Assam government continue coordinating rescue operations, distribution of food and medical supplies, and restoration of essential services.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has continued his on-ground assessment for the fourth consecutive day, visiting severely affected districts including Sivasagar and Charaideo. He has directed officials to prioritize evacuation, relief distribution, and restoration of damaged infrastructure while assuring affected families that compensation and rehabilitation support would be expedited.
Meanwhile, political debate over the causes of the flooding has intensified. The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has demanded a scientific investigation into the recurring floods, alleging that human activities have worsened the disaster. The state government has maintained that its immediate focus remains on rescue, relief, and rehabilitation, with a broader review of flood mitigation measures to follow once the emergency subsides.
With additional rainfall forecast over the coming days, disaster management authorities have urged residents living along riverbanks and in low-lying areas to remain alert, follow official advisories, and be prepared for evacuation if water levels continue to rise. The evolving weather conditions mean the flood situation is expected to remain volatile until rainfall eases and river levels begin to recede.
