Jharkhand Government Holds Fresh Talks With Protesting Students as JPSC-JSSC Deadlock Continues
The Jharkhand government is holding another round of discussions with protesting students and recruitment-exam aspirants as the agitation over alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations continues. The latest meeting is the sixth round of talks aimed at breaking the deadlock.
The protests have been driven largely by demands for transparency and an independent investigation into alleged irregularities in the recruitment process. Students have particularly focused on the 14th JPSC preliminary examination and issues surrounding JSSC examinations.
A major demand of the protesters is the cancellation of the 14th JPSC preliminary examination and a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged irregularities. The controversy intensified after an OMR-sheet image associated with a successful candidate circulated on social media, prompting questions from aspirants about the integrity of the examination process.
Student representatives have also raised broader concerns about the recruitment system, including examination delays, court cases and the uncertainty faced by candidates who spend years preparing for government examinations. The agitation has therefore expanded beyond a single examination to demands for wider reforms in the recruitment process.
The government has been holding discussions with different student groups in an effort to address the grievances. However, earlier rounds of talks failed to produce an agreement that would persuade the protesters to call off their agitation. The latest meeting is consequently being watched closely for signs of a possible breakthrough.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren has said that the government is taking the allegations concerning the examinations seriously. The administration has also sought suggestions from students and other stakeholders regarding reforms that could improve the examination and recruitment system.
The students, however, have continued their protest and hunger strike. Reports on Sunday said that two students participating in the hunger strike were in a weakened condition, increasing pressure on the government to reach a resolution quickly. Protesters have also been demanding direct engagement with the Chief Minister.
The agitation is also beginning to attract wider political attention. JLKM MLA Jairam Mahato has announced a day-long waterless fast in support of the protesting students, while other groups and political figures have expressed solidarity with the movement.
For thousands of government-job aspirants, the dispute has become a question of confidence in the state’s recruitment system. Students argue that examinations must not only be conducted on schedule but also be demonstrably fair, transparent and free from irregularities.
The immediate challenge for the Jharkhand government is therefore to translate the ongoing dialogue into concrete decisions. Unless the two sides agree on the key demands—particularly the proposed investigation and action concerning the disputed examinations—the student agitation is likely to continue.
