Spider-Man: Brand New Day Could Become the Highest-Grossing Film of All Time

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has moved from blockbuster status into genuinely historic territory. The Tom Holland-led Marvel film has already become the second-highest-grossing movie in global box-office history, with its worldwide haul reaching roughly $2.33 billion by the end of August. It has now overtaken Avatar: The Way of Water and is chasing only Avengers: Endgame and Avatar.

The scale of the achievement is remarkable because the film has accomplished it in barely a month. It opened on July 31 after an unusually strong international rollout and immediately established itself as the defining theatrical event of the summer.

Sony’s official figures show just how extraordinary the opening was. Brand New Day generated approximately $360 million in the US and Canada during its opening weekend, setting a new domestic opening record. Its worldwide opening reached about $932 million, the second-biggest global opening ever at the time.

The film crossed $2 billion worldwide in only three weeks, becoming one of the fastest movies ever to reach the milestone. It also became the first non-Avengers Marvel movie to cross $2 billion.

Its momentum has barely slowed. Box Office Mojo currently lists the film at approximately $2.241 billion worldwide, including about $875 million from North America and $1.366 billion from international markets. Its current all-time lifetime ranking is No. 2.

The difference between second place and the all-time record, however, remains substantial. Avengers: Endgame finished its original worldwide theatrical run at approximately $2.8 billion. That means Brand New Day still needs roughly another half-billion dollars to take the overall crown.

That is why the question is no longer whether Brand New Day is a phenomenon. It is whether the film can maintain enough momentum to close the remaining gap.

Domestically, the picture is even more dramatic. The film has already overtaken Avengers: Endgame to become the second-highest-grossing movie ever in the US and Canada. Only Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with roughly $936.6 million domestically, remains ahead.

The achievement has also transformed the Spider-Man franchise’s own box-office hierarchy. Brand New Day has surpassed the $260-million domestic opening of Spider-Man: No Way Home, establishing a new benchmark for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films.

International markets have been equally important. The movie’s overseas total has now passed $1.36 billion, demonstrating that its appeal extends far beyond North America. The combination of Marvel’s global audience, the popularity of Holland’s Spider-Man and the film’s event-movie positioning has produced exceptional staying power.

India has been one of its strongest markets. Brand New Day crossed ₹500 crore gross in India during its third week and overtook Avatar: The Way of Water to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film ever released in India, according to India Today and Sony’s figures.

The film’s Indian performance is particularly striking because it has continued adding substantial collections after its enormous opening. Earlier tracking showed it approaching ₹550 crore gross, while other box-office trackers have subsequently placed the total even higher.

The movie’s extraordinary opening was helped by its combination of familiarity and novelty. Holland returned as Peter Parker, while Zendaya and Jacob Batalon reprised their roles. The film also expanded the Spider-Man world with characters including the Punisher and introduced Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey, adding a wider Marvel connection.

That broader Marvel connectivity appears to have helped turn Brand New Day into more than another Spider-Man sequel. For audiences, it became a major piece of the larger Marvel cinematic universe, while still functioning as a new chapter in Peter Parker’s story.

There is also a psychological factor behind the box-office explosion. No Way Home had already demonstrated the enormous commercial power of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, particularly when the character was connected to Marvel’s wider history. Brand New Day has now shown that the character can generate an even larger theatrical event.

The film has broken records at an extraordinary pace. It set the all-time domestic opening record, the biggest first week in North America and records for Thursday previews, while becoming one of the fastest movies ever to reach $1 billion and $2 billion worldwide.

Yet Endgame remains the ultimate target.

To become the highest-grossing film of all time, Brand New Day must overcome a film whose audience was built around the culmination of more than a decade of Marvel storytelling. Endgame benefited from unprecedented anticipation surrounding the conclusion of the Infinity Saga.

Brand New Day, meanwhile, is achieving its numbers with a different kind of momentum: the enduring popularity of Spider-Man, Tom Holland’s global appeal and the perception of the film as one of the year’s essential theatrical experiences.

The timing is also favourable. Brand New Day has continued to lead the worldwide box office deep into its fifth weekend, even as other major releases enter the marketplace. Screen Daily reported a worldwide haul of around $2.3 billion, with the film still leading the weekend box office.

If its overseas markets continue to hold strongly and its domestic run approaches the $900-million mark, the gap to Endgame could narrow considerably. But reaching $2.8 billion is not guaranteed; the film would need an unusually long and lucrative late-stage theatrical run.

For now, the more immediate historical achievement is already secure: Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become one of only a handful of movies ever to cross $2 billion, the second-highest-grossing film in history, the biggest Spider-Man movie ever and the second-biggest movie ever in North America.

And that leaves Hollywood with one of the biggest box-office questions of 2026: Can Tom Holland’s Spider-Man swing past Avengers: Endgame and take the all-time global crown?

At roughly $2.33 billion and still playing strongly, Brand New Day has already made the impossible look plausible.
