European Union tariffs on US goods suspended until July 14
The European Union has suspended its retaliatory tariffs on US goods worth 21 billion euros until July 14, 2025, to allow more time for negotiations with Washington. This suspension will take legal effect starting Tuesday, April 15, 2025. The EU’s tariffs were initially a response to the US imposing a 20% tariff on EU goods as part of former President Trump’s trade measures on April 2, 2025, which were then put on hold for 90 days by the US a week later.
In a reciprocal move, the EU last week paused its countermeasures on US tariffs related to steel, aluminum, and the automotive sector, although those original US tariffs remain in place. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic traveled to Washington to engage in talks aimed at reaching an agreement before the 90-day period ends.
The European Commission has stated that it considers the US tariffs unjustified and damaging, posing risks to both sides’ economies and the global economy. While the EU is still preparing its response to the 20% levies, it has expressed a preference to avoid retaliation if possible. The future of these tariffs after July 14 will depend on the outcome of ongoing negotiations between the EU and the US.
