Nasha Mukt Abhiyan: The Rising Drug-Free Campaign in India

About Nasha Mukt Abhiyan

272 districts across the country have been selected for the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. The campaign was launched on 15th August 2020 with the aim to create awareness about substance abuse and its ill effects among the youth, university students, and school children. The objective of the campaign is to make people aware of the harmful effects of drugs and to change their perception of drug use. 

The campaign also aims to engage the community in this effort and to create a sense of ownership among them. The launch of this campaign is a step in the right direction towards creating a drug-free India. The government has taken many initiatives in recent years to curb drug use in the country. However, these efforts have not been very successful. Drug use is still rampant in many parts of the country. 

There is a need to create more awareness about the harmful effects of drugs and to change people’s perception of drug use. The launch of this campaign is a step in the right direction towards creating a drug-free India. 

The Progress So Far

The Abhiyaan is a national campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. 

  • One of the key goals of the Abhiyaan is to engage stakeholders in the effort to combat this problem. Women, children, and educational institutions are among the groups that may be most affected by substance abuse, and their involvement is critical to the success of the Abhiyaan.
  • Abhiyaan activities will be led by over 8,000 Master Volunteers in the 272 districts identified.
  • So far, the various on-ground activities undertaken have reached out to 11.99+ Crore people.
  • A total of 3.54 crore young people have taken part in the Abhiyaan.
  • In addition to Yuva Mandals, NYKS and NSS volunteers, youth clubs have been involved with this Abhiyaan, making it one of the largest youth-led campaigns in India. 
  • Women have always been at the forefront of any community development initiative. In recent years, their contribution has been even more vital in reaching out to a larger community through the Anganwadi & ASHA Workers, Mahila Mandals & Women SHGs.

  • Across the country, these women have organized events, competitions, and sessions in 6000+ schools, reaching out to more than 13 lakh students. In doing so, they have helped to spread awareness & have also provided essential support to those who are most vulnerable.
  • The Abhiyaan is an online campaign that uses social media to spread its message. The campaign has handles on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram where it shares daily updates. It also has an Android-based mobile application that captures data of activities happening in real-time by districts and master volunteers. 
  • This app is available on the Google Play Store. The Abhiyaan is a unique campaign different from other online campaigns. It uses social media to spread its message and it has an Android-based mobile application. The use of social media and the mobile application makes the Abhiyaan a more engaging campaign.
