The Myth: Do Food Products Contain Human Tissue? Why the Myth Exists

Claims that ordinary food and beverages contain human tissue, particularly tissue derived from aborted fetuses, have circulated online for more than a decade. The story is often presented as a shocking revelation about artificial flavours, processed foods and major food companies. But the claim combines a real piece of scientific history with a false conclusion about what consumers actually eat.

At the centre of the controversy is HEK-293, a human cell line first developed in the 1970s from kidney cells obtained from a fetus. The cell line subsequently became a laboratory tool used extensively in biological research. Some researchers have also used HEK-293 cells to study human taste receptors and screen potential flavour compounds.

That scientific fact is where the story begins to change into a myth. Using a cell line during laboratory research is not the same thing as putting those cells into a food product. In the flavour-development applications that generated the controversy, the cells functioned as a research and testing system: scientists could use them to investigate how particular compounds interact with taste receptors. The cells themselves were not the flavouring ingredient.

The distinction between “used to develop or test something” and “contained in the final product” is therefore crucial. It is similar to using laboratory equipment to test an ingredient: the equipment may be essential to the experiment without becoming part of what consumers ultimately purchase.

The myth gained particular attention around Senomyx, a biotechnology company involved in flavour research. Online posts connected Senomyx’s research involving HEK-293 cells with major food and beverage brands and then made the leap that products from those companies contained “aborted fetal cells.” Fact-checking investigations found that this interpretation was incorrect.

Several companies named in the claims have also rejected the allegation. PepsiCo, for example, said it did not conduct or fund research using human tissue or cell lines derived from embryos or fetuses. Other major food companies similarly stated that the alleged cell material was not being used as an ingredient in their products.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has likewise distinguished between legitimate food ingredients and research materials. The FDA regulates substances intentionally added to food and requires food manufacturers to meet applicable safety requirements. In reporting specifically addressing the fetal-tissue claim, an FDA spokesperson stated that there was no evidence that aborted human fetal kidney cells were being used in food products.

Another reason the story persists is that the underlying fact about HEK-293 is emotionally powerful. Saying that a laboratory cell line ultimately traces its history to human fetal tissue sounds dramatically different from explaining that researchers maintain a long-established cultured cell line in laboratories. Social-media posts frequently remove that scientific context and turn a complicated research process into a much simpler claim: “human cells are in your food.”

The terminology itself can also be misleading. HEK-293 is a cell line, not a piece of fetal tissue being repeatedly harvested and placed into food. Modern cells in a laboratory culture are descendants of the original cells and are maintained and multiplied under controlled laboratory conditions. Their historical origin does not mean that a piece of the original fetus is being physically added to every product allegedly associated with the research.

There is also an important distinction between the ethical debate and the factual claim. People can legitimately have ethical or religious objections to particular forms of human-cell research. Those questions can be serious and deserve transparent discussion. But an ethical objection to research involving a particular cell line does not establish that the resulting food contains human tissue.

Modern food science does use cells in some contexts, but this is a separate development. For example, regulators now oversee foods made from cultured animal cells, where animal cells are intentionally grown as part of the food-production process. The FDA describes this as an emerging technology involving cells obtained from livestock, poultry or seafood. This should not be confused with the allegation that conventional foods contain human fetal tissue.

The enduring “human tissue in food” story appears to come from a real scientific detail being stripped of its context. HEK-293 is real. Its historical origin is real. Its use in some laboratory research, including taste-receptor research, is real. What does not follow from those facts is the claim that human fetal tissue is an ingredient in ordinary commercial food and drinks. Multiple fact-checking investigations have found no evidence supporting that conclusion.

The broader lesson is important: misinformation does not always begin with a completely invented fact. Sometimes it begins with something true, removes the distinction between research, testing and manufacturing, adds emotionally charged language, and then presents the resulting inference as a fact. That is precisely what makes this particular myth so persistent.
