Delhi experiences rain and thunderstorms amid heatwave

Delhi has recently experienced a significant shift in weather patterns, with rain and thunderstorms providing temporary relief from the ongoing heatwave. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed this change to a Western Disturbance, which brought rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds to the National Capital Region (NCR) between April 9 and 11. This phenomenon significantly reduced the prevailing heatwave conditions that had gripped Delhi for several days, with temperatures soaring past 40°C earlier in the week.

On Thursday evening, Delhi witnessed light rain accompanied by a dust storm and gusty winds of 40-50 km/h, which helped bring down the temperatures. The minimum temperature on Thursday was recorded at 26°C, marking the warmest April night in three years. The IMD issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning, forecasting similar weather for Friday as well.

Despite this brief respite, the IMD has warned of a fresh heatwave spell expected to affect Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan from April 14-15. Temperatures are likely to rise again after the current cloudy and rainy conditions subside.
