Chinese Passport, Religious Books, AI Device Recovered from US National Arrested Near Nepal Border; Multi-Agency Probe Underway

Indian security agencies are investigating the background and activities of a 36-year-old American national, identified as Jordan Brown of California, who was arrested near the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district while allegedly attempting to cross into Nepal through an unauthorised route without valid travel documents. The arrest has triggered a multi-agency inquiry because of several unusual items recovered from his possession.

According to officials, personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) intercepted Brown near Border Pillar No. 516 in the Mainihwa area close to the Sonauli border crossing on July 11. Police allege that he attempted to flee during questioning but was apprehended with the assistance of local villagers. A case has been registered under provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act for entering and remaining in India without valid documents.

During the search, investigators recovered a Chinese passport, religious books, an AI-powered translation device, two mobile phones, cash, Nepalese currency, a diary and other personal belongings. The discovery of the Chinese passport has become the focus of the investigation, with intelligence agencies examining its authenticity, how it came into Brown’s possession and whether it was used during his travels.

Brown has reportedly given investigators multiple versions of his travel history. He claims to be a former US Navy serviceman and told officials that he entered India by sea after losing his American passport while travelling in Thailand. According to his account, he travelled through Sri Lanka before reaching India, where he allegedly stayed in Goa for several months before attempting to enter Nepal. Authorities are now verifying these claims through immigration records and by coordinating with foreign diplomatic missions.

Officials have informed the United States Embassy and are also examining the Chinese passport and other recovered material. Intelligence agencies are probing whether Brown acted alone or had any connections with individuals or organisations operating across international borders. At this stage, investigators have not announced any evidence linking him to espionage or any organised criminal activity, stressing that the inquiry remains at an early stage.

The case has drawn attention because the Sonauli crossing is one of the busiest and most strategically important gateways between India and Nepal. Security agencies routinely monitor the area for illegal migration, cross-border smuggling and other activities that may pose national security concerns. Authorities are expected to continue questioning Brown while forensic examination of the seized devices and documents is carried out.
