Jharkhand Opens Dialogue With Protesting Students as Rahul Gandhi Launches Instagram ‘Ask Me Anything’ for Gen Z
The Jharkhand government has taken a significant step toward resolving the ongoing student agitation by initiating formal talks with protesters demanding action over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. Student leaders announced the formation of an 11-member delegation that will represent the protesters in discussions with the Hemant Soren-led government, raising hopes of a negotiated breakthrough after nearly two weeks of demonstrations.
The protests, led primarily by aspirants of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), have centred on allegations of examination irregularities, delayed recruitments and demands for greater transparency in the state’s recruitment process. Protesters have maintained an indefinite sit-in and hunger strike in Ranchi, insisting that the government order an impartial investigation and introduce systemic reforms to restore confidence among job seekers.
Government officials have welcomed the formation of the 11-member panel, describing it as an opportunity for constructive dialogue. Chief Minister Hemant Soren had earlier expressed willingness to engage with the students, and the delegation is expected to present a formal charter of demands during the negotiations. While both sides have signalled openness to discussions, student leaders have clarified that the protest will continue until concrete assurances are provided.
As the agitation gathered national attention, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi entered the debate through a youth-focused outreach campaign on Instagram. Launching his first-ever “Ask Me Anything” session on the platform, Gandhi invited Gen Z users to ask questions on education, jobs and governance. Responding to queries about the Jharkhand protests, he said every government—whether led by the Congress, the Centre or the Jharkhand coalition—must listen to students and reform what he described as a costly and failing education system.
Rahul Gandhi’s intervention is part of the Congress party’s broader effort to strengthen its engagement with young voters ahead of upcoming elections. His interactive social media session focused on employment, examination reforms, affordable education and opportunities for the youth, reflecting an increasing emphasis on digital platforms to connect directly with first-time voters. Political observers see the initiative as an attempt to position the Congress leadership closer to the concerns of India’s younger generation.
Meanwhile, political pressure on the Jharkhand government continues to mount. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rahul Gandhi have voiced support for the protesting students, even though the Congress is a partner in the ruling Jharkhand coalition. With the student movement entering a crucial phase and talks now underway, the outcome of the negotiations could influence not only recruitment reforms in Jharkhand but also shape the national debate on examination transparency, youth employment and accountability in public recruitment.
