Study Links Dietary Patterns in Pregnancy to Infant Health Outcomes

A new study has highlighted the connection between what women eat during pregnancy and important health outcomes for their babies. Researchers found that different maternal dietary patterns were associated with differences in gestational age and infant birth length, reinforcing the importance of nutrition during pregnancy.

The study, published on September 2, 2026, in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analysed data from 1,404 pregnant women participating in Germany’s LIFE Child cohort between 2011 and 2025. Researchers used food-frequency questionnaires to identify distinct dietary patterns and examined their relationship with pregnancy and newborn outcomes.

Four major dietary patterns were identified: a mixed-diet pattern, a traditional bread-based pattern, a diet high in ultra-processed foods and a vegetable-rich pattern. The researchers then compared these patterns with factors including mothers’ pre-pregnancy BMI, gestational weight gain and characteristics of their newborns.

Women following the vegetable-rich dietary pattern had the lowest pre-pregnancy BMI among the groups studied. Their babies also had a significantly higher gestational age at birth and greater birth length compared with infants associated with some of the other dietary patterns.

The study also found that women following the high-ultra-processed-food pattern had the highest pre-pregnancy BMI and the greatest gestational weight gain. Their infants had the lowest proportion of being appropriate for gestational age, although this particular difference was not statistically significant.

The findings are consistent with other recent research suggesting that dietary quality during pregnancy can influence fetal growth. A separate 2026 prospective study involving 1,857 mother-infant pairs in China found that dietary patterns had different associations with fetal growth depending on the trimester in which they were followed.

Another 2026 study examining the Planetary Health Diet found that stronger adherence was associated with higher birth weight, slightly longer gestation and lower odds of preterm birth. In contrast, dietary patterns higher in saturated fat or animal foods and added sugars were associated with less favourable birth outcomes.

Researchers caution, however, that dietary patterns are closely connected with other factors, including maternal age, BMI, socioeconomic conditions and lifestyle. The latest findings therefore show associations rather than proving that a particular food pattern directly causes a specific infant outcome.

The evidence also remains uneven for some outcomes. A recent systematic review found limited evidence that pregnancy diets rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, fish, dairy and unsaturated fats and lower in processed meat, added sugars and saturated fats may reduce the risk of babies being small for gestational age. However, the evidence was not strong enough to draw firm conclusions for several other birth outcomes.

The researchers say the findings support the importance of providing early nutritional guidance during pregnancy. Rather than focusing on individual foods alone, future pregnancy-care strategies may increasingly consider overall dietary patterns and the nutritional quality of the mother’s diet.

The latest research adds to growing evidence that maternal nutrition is an important part of pregnancy care and may influence aspects of infant growth and development. Further studies will be needed to determine which dietary changes produce the greatest benefits and how recommendations can be tailored to different stages of pregnancy.
