‘Mother of Hubble’: How Nancy Grace Roman Ushered in a New Era of Astronomy

Nancy Grace Roman, the pioneering American astronomer known as the “Mother of Hubble,” is receiving renewed attention as NASA’s newest major space observatory bearing her name begins its journey into space. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched on August 30, 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the space-based astronomy programme that Roman herself helped establish decades ago.

Roman was born in 1925 and decided at an early age that she wanted to become an astronomer. At a time when women faced significant barriers in scientific careers, she pursued astronomy through Swarthmore College and later earned a doctorate from the University of Chicago. She subsequently worked at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory before joining NASA shortly after the agency was created in 1958.

In 1961, Roman became NASA’s first Chief of Astronomy and the first woman to hold an executive position at the agency. Her influence went far beyond conducting astronomical research: she helped determine which major scientific projects NASA should pursue and worked to build support for space-based astronomy.

At the time, astronomers were still heavily dependent on telescopes on Earth. Roman recognized that Earth’s atmosphere blocks or distorts important wavelengths of light and that many astronomical questions could only be properly investigated from space. She therefore became one of the strongest advocates for putting powerful observatories above the atmosphere.

Her work helped lead NASA toward a series of space observatories. Under her leadership, the agency launched four Orbiting Astronomical Observatories between 1966 and 1972. Although only two were successful, they demonstrated the scientific potential of observing the universe from space and helped establish the technological and institutional foundation for later missions.

But Roman’s most famous achievement was her campaign for what eventually became the Hubble Space Telescope. During the 1960s, she brought astronomers and engineers together to define what a large space telescope should accomplish. She then worked for years to persuade NASA officials, government leaders and Congress that such an ambitious observatory deserved funding.

That effort was far from easy. NASA faced financial constraints, while a giant space telescope was an expensive and technically challenging proposition. Roman nevertheless continued building the scientific and political case for the project. Her persistence ultimately helped transform the concept of a large space telescope from an ambitious proposal into reality.

Hubble launched in 1990 and went on to fundamentally change humanity’s view of the universe. Its observations helped astronomers study distant galaxies, stars, planets and cosmic phenomena with extraordinary clarity. Roman died in 2018, but her influence remained deeply embedded in the programme she had helped make possible.

Her legacy now extends to a telescope designed for a very different era of astronomy. NASA’s Roman Space Telescope is built to survey enormous areas of the sky using infrared observations, combining a wide field of view with powerful imaging capabilities. It will investigate dark energy, dark matter and exoplanets, while also producing data useful for many other areas of astrophysics.

Roman’s namesake observatory launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy on August 30 and is now travelling toward the Sun-Earth L2 point, roughly 1.5 million kilometres from Earth. NASA expects the spacecraft to undergo commissioning before beginning its scientific programme, with initial science observations expected in 2027.

One of Roman’s most important principles was that major space observatories should serve the wider scientific community. NASA says the new telescope’s processed data will be made publicly available, allowing researchers around the world to investigate the enormous volumes of information it gathers.

The new telescope also represents a striking continuation of Roman’s original vision. Hubble transformed astronomy by providing an unprecedented close look at individual cosmic objects, while Roman is designed to take a much wider view, surveying huge portions of the universe and identifying patterns that can reveal how galaxies, planetary systems and cosmic structures evolve.

Its mission could therefore help answer some of modern astronomy’s biggest questions: What is driving the accelerating expansion of the universe? What is dark matter made of? How common are planetary systems beyond our Solar System? And how did the universe develop into the structure we observe today?

More than a century after Nancy Grace Roman’s birth, the observatory carrying her name is turning her original philosophy into a new scientific reality. The woman who fought to give astronomy a view beyond Earth’s atmosphere has now become the namesake of a telescope intended to survey the cosmos on an unprecedented scale.

Her title as the “Mother of Hubble” therefore captures only part of her contribution. Roman helped establish the idea that space-based observatories should be central to modern astronomy—and the Roman Space Telescope is perhaps the clearest continuation yet of that vision.
