Assam Flood Death Toll Climbs as State Battles Deluge; A Look at India’s Worst Flood Disasters

Assam continues to grapple with one of its worst flood emergencies in recent years, with the death toll rising to 78 as incessant rainfall, overflowing rivers and widespread inundation continue to disrupt life across the state. More than three lakh people remain affected, while thousands are still unable to return to their homes because of damaged infrastructure, waterlogged villages and thick layers of mud left behind by receding floodwaters. Rescue and relief operations by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local authorities are continuing in the worst-hit districts.

The annual floods in Assam are largely driven by the Brahmaputra and Barak river systems, which swell during the southwest monsoon. Experts say intense rainfall, riverbank erosion, siltation, deforestation, encroachment on floodplains and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events linked to climate change have made flooding more severe and destructive.

The current disaster has revived memories of several devastating floods that have shaped India’s disaster management history. Among the most destructive was the 2022 Assam flood, which affected more than 5.6 million people, inundated nearly every district in the state and claimed over 200 lives, making it one of the worst floods in Assam in decades.

Another landmark disaster was the 2013 Uttarakhand floods, triggered by cloudbursts and intense rainfall. Flash floods and landslides devastated Kedarnath and surrounding areas, killing thousands of people and causing massive destruction to roads, bridges and religious sites. The tragedy remains one of India’s deadliest natural disasters.

The 2005 Mumbai floods brought India’s financial capital to a standstill after nearly 944 mm of rainfall fell within 24 hours. The unprecedented downpour inundated roads, railways and airports, leaving over 700 people dead and exposing major shortcomings in urban drainage infrastructure.

In 2018, Kerala witnessed its worst flooding in nearly a century after exceptionally heavy monsoon rains forced the opening of multiple dams. Hundreds of people lost their lives, over a million residents were displaced and large parts of the state suffered extensive damage to homes, roads and public infrastructure.

More recently, the 2024 monsoon floods affected several states, including Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala. The season was marked by widespread flooding, landslides and large-scale evacuations, underscoring the growing vulnerability of many regions to extreme rainfall events.

Climate scientists warn that while seasonal flooding is a natural feature of river basins such as the Brahmaputra, rising global temperatures are increasing the intensity of rainfall events. Combined with rapid urbanisation, deforestation, shrinking wetlands and inadequate drainage systems, these factors are amplifying the human and economic costs of floods across India.

As Assam moves from rescue to recovery, authorities face the dual challenge of providing immediate relief to affected communities while strengthening long-term flood resilience through improved embankments, river management, early warning systems and climate-adaptive infrastructure. The recurring floods highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to reduce the impact of one of India’s most persistent natural disasters.
