CBSE makes three languages mandatory for Class 9 from 2026

The CBSE has made three languages mandatory for Class 9 (and Class 10) starting July 1, 2026, as per a notification issued on May 15, 2026.

Key details of the new policy:

Aspect	Requirement
Languages	Three languages: R1, R2, R3
Indian languages	At least two must be native Indian languages
Foreign language	Can be chosen only as R3 (third language) or as an additional fourth subject
Board exam for R3	No Board exam in Class 10 for the third language; assessed internally by schools
Basis	Aligns with NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023

This change applies to the 2026–27 academic session for Class IX students. The third language will be evaluated through school-based assessment rather than the CBSE Board examination.
