Cockroach Janta Party Instagram Handle Restored After Brief Takedown on Independence Day

The official Instagram account of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) was briefly taken down on the morning of August 15, 2026, before being restored later the same day. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke publicly announced the restoration, turning what began as a social-media disruption into another controversy surrounding the movement.

Dipke first raised the issue on X at around 6:16 am, saying the official Instagram handle had been removed. He described those responsible as “bloody cowards” and questioned the timing of the action on Independence Day.

Less than half an hour later, at about 6:45 am, Dipke posted another update saying that the CJP had successfully recovered its Instagram account. The rapid restoration meant that the account was unavailable only temporarily, although the reason for the takedown was not established in the reports.

The CJP alleged that the timing was significant. In a statement after the restoration, the organisation described the incident as an attempt to “muzzle” its voice on a day associated with freedom, democratic rights and freedom of expression.

There was, however, no confirmed evidence in the available reports establishing who initiated the suspension or whether it resulted from a government request, a platform enforcement decision, a user complaint or another technical or administrative action. The attribution therefore remains an allegation by the organisation rather than an independently established fact.

The incident comes at a particularly sensitive time for the CJP. The youth-oriented movement has recently attracted national attention through campaigns and protests on education, employment and institutional issues, including a recent students’ protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

Dipke has also been involved in several recent controversies linked to the movement. In the legal sphere, CJP supporters became involved in the debate surrounding NALSAR University students and the Bar Council of India’s decision concerning the enrolment of the university’s 2026 graduates.

The movement has simultaneously been seeking to expand its organisational activities. On Independence Day, Dipke launched the “School Thik Karo” campaign in Maharashtra, beginning with an audit of government-school facilities and highlighting gaps in basic infrastructure in rural schools.

The CJP’s social-media presence has already faced problems before the latest Instagram incident. Its X account was previously withheld in India, while the organisation continued to rely heavily on Instagram and other digital platforms to communicate with supporters.

That background makes the latest Instagram episode particularly important for the movement. Social media is central to the CJP’s ability to mobilise young supporters, circulate campaign material and establish an identity outside conventional political structures.

The controversy also arrives amid a broader legal dispute connected to the name and activities of the Cockroach Janta Party. The Supreme Court recently issued notices in a petition involving alleged misuse of court observations, fake advocates and activities associated with the CJP, with the matter listed for further consideration.

At the same time, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has addressed the controversy surrounding the word “cockroach”, saying that a remark made during a court hearing had been misquoted and subsequently presented in a misleading manner. The episode has contributed to the unusual public visibility of the CJP movement.

For now, the immediate social-media crisis appears to have ended with the restoration of the Instagram account. But the episode has opened another debate about platform moderation, political satire, digital speech and the vulnerability of emerging movements that depend heavily on privately controlled social-media platforms.

The significance of the incident ultimately lies less in the relatively brief period for which the account was unavailable and more in what the confrontation represents. For the CJP, the restoration has become a message of resilience; for observers, it raises unanswered questions about why the account was removed in the first place and whether similar disruptions could occur again.

On India’s Independence Day, therefore, the CJP used the restoration of its Instagram presence to reinforce its larger political and social message: that its growing youth movement intends to remain visible, provocative and active in India’s increasingly digital public sphere. The reason behind the temporary takedown, however, remains unclear.
