Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Detained During New Delhi Protest, Escalating Political Tensions
Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were briefly detained by the Delhi Police during a protest march in New Delhi after they and several party leaders attempted to march towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence. The demonstration was organized to demand accountability over the ongoing controversy surrounding national examination paper leaks and alleged failures in the education system. The leaders were later released after being taken into preventive custody.
The protest came amid growing nationwide unrest led by students and youth groups over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. Thousands of protesters have been demanding stricter action against those responsible for examination leaks, institutional reforms, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Television footage and videos circulated on social media showed security personnel escorting Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra away from the protest site after police prevented demonstrators from advancing towards the high-security zone surrounding the Prime Minister’s residence. Congress leaders alleged that Rahul Gandhi was manhandled during the detention, with photographs released by the party showing him with a bleeding nose. Delhi Police did not immediately issue a detailed response to those allegations.
Addressing supporters after his release, Rahul Gandhi accused the government of avoiding parliamentary debate on the examination crisis and suppressing democratic dissent through police action. He maintained that the protest was intended to highlight the concerns of students affected by paper leaks rather than create political confrontation. Government representatives, however, criticized the demonstration as politically motivated and defended the administration’s handling of the examination irregularities, stating that arrests had been made and corrective measures were already underway.
The confrontation has intensified the political battle over education governance, with opposition parties alleging that repeated examination leaks have eroded public confidence in recruitment and admission processes. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has rejected these accusations, asserting that reforms and investigations are progressing while accusing the Congress of exploiting student grievances for political gain.
