Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay used his Independence Day address in Chennai on August 15, 2026, to connect the meaning of political freedom with the everyday struggle for clean and accountable governance. In one of his first major Independence Day messages as Chief Minister, Vijay said that freeing Tamil Nadu from corruption today is comparable to the struggle for independence itself.
Vijay said his government was working in “mission mode” with a clear objective of establishing corruption-free administration. His formulation sought to move the Independence Day conversation from the historical achievement of 1947 towards contemporary issues affecting citizens in their daily interaction with government.
The Chief Minister’s remarks carried particular political significance because Vijay entered office only in May 2026. His government marked a major shift in Tamil Nadu politics after his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam ended the long-standing alternation between the DMK and AIADMK in state government.

The proposal received backing from both the DMK and AIADMK.

The statement also distinguishes Vijay’s political rhetoric from a purely ceremonial Independence Day speech. Rather than treating August 15 solely as an occasion to remember the freedom struggle, the Chief Minister attempted to define a contemporary idea of freedom — freedom from corruption, inefficient administration and practices that, in his view, prevent citizens from fully benefiting from government.
