Two Arrested in North Kashmir for Alleged Gang Rape; Police Say Assault Was Filmed
Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested two men in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district for allegedly gang raping a 21-year-old woman, recording the assault on a mobile phone, and threatening the survivor to prevent her from approaching authorities. The arrests followed a multi-day investigation that relied on technical evidence, human intelligence, and scientific methods, police officials said.
According to Baramulla Police, the survivor lodged a complaint on July 25, alleging that she and a male companion had travelled to the Jalsheeri Drangbal area when they were confronted by two accused. Police said the men allegedly assaulted the male companion before taking the woman to a nearby location, where they allegedly committed the sexual assault and recorded the incident on video.
Investigators stated that the accused also allegedly threatened the survivor with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident. Following the registration of the case, police teams examined electronic evidence, tracked the suspects through technical surveillance, and gathered intelligence that eventually led to their arrest. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurinderpal Singh said the investigation was conducted using both digital and conventional investigative methods.
Police have seized material evidence, including the mobile phone allegedly used to record the assault, and sent it for forensic examination. Officials said further forensic analysis and witness statements will form part of the ongoing investigation, while the accused have been taken into custody and are being produced before the competent court for further legal proceedings.
The case has sparked widespread concern across Jammu and Kashmir, with civil society groups calling for a swift and impartial investigation and strict action under the law. Women’s rights advocates have also stressed the importance of protecting the survivor’s identity and ensuring that any digital recordings related to the alleged crime are secured and prevented from further circulation.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police have indicated that additional charges may be invoked depending on the outcome of forensic analysis and other evidence collected during the probe. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information or any content that could compromise the survivor’s privacy or the investigation.
