US Attacks Oil Tanker in Strait of Hormuz as Strikes Reported in Tehran
The conflict between the United States and Iran escalated sharply on Thursday after US forces targeted an oil tanker near Iran’s Kharg Island in the Strait of Hormuz, while fresh airstrikes were reported across Tehran and several strategic military locations. The developments mark one of the most significant military escalations in the Gulf in recent weeks, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
According to US military officials, the tanker was disabled as part of a renewed naval blockade aimed at preventing vessels linked to Iran from transporting oil through the strategic waterway. Washington maintains that the operation is intended to restrict Iranian military logistics and enforce maritime security, while Tehran has condemned the strike as an unlawful attack on commercial shipping.
At the same time, multiple explosions were reported in Tehran, along with strikes in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Sirik and other military installations. US forces reportedly targeted missile launch sites, coastal defence systems and military infrastructure that officials say could threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian authorities said dozens of people were killed or injured in the latest wave of attacks and accused the United States of violating previous understandings intended to reduce hostilities. Tehran also reiterated its warning that continued US military action would invite a broader response against American interests and regional allies.
The latest military action follows Iran’s repeated threats to disrupt navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints through which a substantial share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports pass. Any disruption in the narrow waterway has immediate implications for international shipping, insurance costs and global energy markets.
Regional tensions have already spread beyond Iranian territory. Iran has launched missile and drone attacks targeting US partners in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan, while Gulf states have activated air defence systems amid concerns that the conflict could widen further. Shipping companies are also reassessing routes through the Gulf as maritime security deteriorates.
Global oil markets reacted immediately to the escalation, with crude prices rising as traders assessed the risk of prolonged disruption to energy supplies from the Gulf. Analysts warn that any sustained closure or militarisation of the Strait of Hormuz could trigger renewed volatility in fuel prices and global inflation.
Diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis continue, but with both Washington and Tehran exchanging military strikes and hardened rhetoric, the prospects for an immediate de-escalation remain uncertain. International observers warn that unless backchannel negotiations resume quickly, the conflict could expand into a broader regional confrontation involving additional Middle Eastern states.
