Withdraw Cases or Face Fresh Agitation: CJP Gives Centre Deadline as Protest Truce Hangs in Balance
The fragile truce between the Centre and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) came under fresh strain on Monday after the organization warned that nationwide protests could resume as early as Tuesday if the government fails to honour commitments made during recent negotiations. The warning comes just days after the suspension of a 36-day agitation that had drawn widespread public attention and prompted high-level talks between protest leaders and Union ministers.
CJP leaders alleged that the government has not fulfilled key assurances that persuaded them to temporarily withdraw their protests. According to the organization, the Centre had agreed that criminal cases registered against protesters would be withdrawn, detained participants would be released, and a written agreement outlining these commitments would be issued. However, CJP claims that the promised document has not been delivered and that police action against demonstrators has continued in several states.
Speaking on behalf of the organization, CJP representatives said the government is “breaching the agreement” reached during negotiations. They accused authorities in states including Bihar and West Bengal of continuing surveillance, detentions and arrests despite the understanding that no further punitive action would be taken against peaceful protesters. The organization insisted that unless these measures are reversed immediately, it would have no option but to restart its nationwide agitation.
The protest movement had initially been suspended after marathon discussions with senior ministers from the Central Government, during which several demands were reportedly accepted in principle. Those discussions followed weeks of demonstrations over alleged irregularities in the examination system and broader demands for accountability and reforms. The agreement was widely viewed as a significant breakthrough that temporarily eased political tensions and restored normalcy in several parts of the country.
Despite that breakthrough, CJP leaders argue that implementation has fallen short. They maintain that verbal assurances are insufficient and insist on a formal written commitment confirming the withdrawal of all FIRs and criminal proceedings against protesters. According to the organization, such documentation is essential to ensure that local police authorities comply with the decisions taken at the national level.
The possibility of renewed protests has prompted heightened security preparations in the national capital. Delhi Police have reportedly strengthened deployment at sensitive locations, including Jantar Mantar and other areas that witnessed large gatherings during the earlier phase of the agitation. Authorities are monitoring developments closely in anticipation of any fresh mobilization by supporters if negotiations collapse.
Meanwhile, developments in some states suggest partial progress. Reports indicate that the Bihar government has initiated steps to withdraw certain cases linked to the protests, a move welcomed by demonstrators but viewed by CJP as only a partial fulfilment of the broader national commitment. Protest leaders argue that similar action must be taken uniformly across all affected states before the movement can consider the matter resolved.
In a possible sign of renewed negotiations, CJP later indicated that discussions with the Centre had continued and claimed that the government had expressed willingness to withdraw FIRs and release detained protesters. However, the organization emphasized that it would wait for official implementation before formally abandoning its ultimatum, underscoring the trust deficit that continues to define the relationship between both sides.
The coming hours are expected to be crucial. If the Centre issues the promised written assurances and initiates the withdrawal of pending criminal cases, the temporary peace may hold. Failure to do so, however, could trigger another round of nationwide demonstrations, reviving a protest movement that has already emerged as one of the most significant public mobilizations of the year and posing a fresh political challenge for the government.
