Five Killed in Shooting at Youth Welfare Centre in Germany’s Stade, Suspects Arrested

Four women and one man die in one of Germany’s deadliest shootings in recent years as police investigate motive

A deadly shooting at a youth welfare facility in the northern German town of Stade has left at least five people dead, with authorities confirming that four women and one man were killed after gunfire erupted inside the centre on Monday. Police have arrested two people, including the suspected gunman, as investigators work to determine the motive behind the attack.

The shooting occurred at a youth welfare facility on Dankersstrasse in Stade, about 40–50 kilometres west of Hamburg. The centre provides temporary accommodation and support for pregnant women and young mothers with children. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of multiple gunshots, prompting a major police operation that sealed off the surrounding neighbourhood.

Police said the five victims died at the scene, while several other adults sustained injuries. Officials have not yet released the identities of the victims or disclosed the exact number of injured people, citing the ongoing investigation and the need to notify families.

Authorities confirmed that two individuals were taken into custody, including the suspected shooter. Investigators have not yet clarified the role of the second detainee, and no official motive has been announced. Police said there is currently no indication of an ongoing threat to the public, although forensic teams continue to examine the crime scene.

Eyewitnesses described hearing multiple gunshots before seeing heavily armed police, ambulances and rescue helicopters converge on the facility. Local schools and childcare centres in the vicinity were temporarily placed under heightened security as officers secured the area.

Later updates from German authorities indicated that a sixth adult victim died in hospital after suffering critical injuries, raising the overall death toll from the attack. Officials described the incident as a likely “extended family tragedy,” while stressing that there is currently no evidence suggesting a terrorist or politically motivated attack.

Germany has some of Europe’s strictest firearm regulations, making mass shootings relatively uncommon. However, the country has experienced several high-profile incidents in recent years, including the 2023 Hamburg shooting and the 2020 Hanau attack, both of which prompted renewed debates over gun control and mental health interventions.

Investigators are expected to interview witnesses, analyse forensic evidence and examine the suspect’s background in the coming days. Prosecutors have indicated that additional details regarding the victims, the suspect and the circumstances leading to the shooting will be released as the investigation progresses.
