US Treasury Launches Online Portal for Sanctions Removal Requests, Streamlining OFAC Delisting Process
New digital platform allows sanctioned individuals and entities to submit reconsideration petitions online, request supporting documents, and track a more structured review process
The U.S. Department of the Treasury has launched a new online OFAC Reconsideration Portal, marking a significant modernization of the country’s sanctions administration system. The portal enables individuals, companies, and other sanctioned parties to submit requests electronically for removal from U.S. sanctions lists, replacing the traditional email-based process with a more streamlined digital platform.
The initiative has been introduced by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the agency responsible for administering and enforcing U.S. economic and trade sanctions. Officials say the new portal is designed to improve transparency, efficiency, and consistency in handling administrative reconsideration requests, commonly known as delisting petitions.
Through the portal, sanctioned persons or their authorized representatives can now file petitions requesting removal from OFAC sanctions lists. Users may also request a “courtesy document” containing certain unclassified and non-privileged information underlying their sanctions designation, helping petitioners better understand the basis of the action against them.
Treasury officials have encouraged applicants to use the online system, stating that digital submissions are expected to result in faster processing. The department has also indicated that it plans to gradually move away from accepting reconsideration requests via email, making the portal the preferred channel for future submissions.
According to OFAC guidance, petitioners seeking removal must provide detailed identifying information, relevant supporting documents, and legal arguments demonstrating either that the original basis for the sanctions no longer exists or that there was an insufficient basis for the designation. Each petition is reviewed individually under the procedures established by federal regulations.
The launch is part of a broader Treasury effort to modernize sanctions administration while maintaining the effectiveness of U.S. national security and foreign policy measures. In recent months, OFAC has introduced several procedural improvements aimed at making its review process more transparent without altering the legal standards governing sanctions or delisting decisions.
Legal experts note that the portal could reduce administrative delays by ensuring applicants submit complete information at the outset. However, they caution that filing through the new platform does not guarantee removal from sanctions lists. Every request will continue to undergo a comprehensive legal and factual review based on applicable U.S. sanctions laws and regulations.
The digital portal is expected to benefit international businesses, financial institutions, legal practitioners, and sanctioned individuals seeking administrative reconsideration. By centralizing submissions and improving communication between applicants and OFAC, the Treasury hopes to create a more efficient and transparent sanctions review process while preserving the integrity of U.S. sanctions enforcement.
