Haridwar–Indore Bus Tragedy: At Least 8 Killed, 24 Injured After Bus Catches Fire Following Trailer Collision on Delhi–Mumbai Expressway
Deadly pre-dawn crash in Rajasthan’s Dausa triggers massive rescue operation as authorities probe cause of the accident
A devastating road accident on the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway claimed at least eight lives and left around 24 passengers injured after a private bus travelling from Haridwar to Indore collided with a trailer and caught fire in Rajasthan’s Dausa district during the early hours of Wednesday. Initial reports indicate that the bus was carrying around 37–39 passengers when the tragedy unfolded.
According to police officials, the collision occurred at around 2:30 a.m. in the Kolwa police station area. The impact reportedly caused the bus to lose control, plunge into a roadside gorge, and burst into flames, trapping several passengers inside before they could escape.
Rescue teams, firefighters, police personnel and local residents rushed to the accident site shortly after receiving emergency calls. Firefighters battled intense flames while emergency responders evacuated injured passengers and shifted them to nearby hospitals for treatment. Several victims are reported to be in critical condition.
Officials said many passengers were asleep when the collision occurred, leaving little time for evacuation. The rapid spread of the fire is believed to have contributed significantly to the high casualty count, although authorities are still determining the exact sequence of events.
The bus, reportedly operated by an Indore-based private travel company, was on its scheduled journey from Haridwar to Indore. Police have begun identifying the deceased and informing their families while arranging medical assistance for survivors.
Senior district officials and police officers visited the accident site to supervise rescue and relief operations. A detailed investigation has been initiated to determine whether speeding, driver fatigue, mechanical failure or other factors contributed to the crash. Authorities are also expected to examine the condition of both the bus and the trailer involved in the collision.
The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over road safety on India’s expanding network of high-speed expressways. Safety experts have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of speed regulations, enhanced driver monitoring, and stronger emergency response infrastructure to reduce fatalities in such high-impact crashes.
The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, one of India’s flagship highway infrastructure projects, has witnessed multiple fatal accidents in recent months. Investigators are expected to release a detailed accident report after examining vehicle data, eyewitness accounts and forensic evidence from the scene.
