Monsoon Arrives with a Bang: IMD Issues Red Alert as Heavy Rain Soaks Delhi-NCR; Punjab and Haryana Brace for Intense Showers
Southwest Monsoon Reaches the Capital After Delayed Onset; Thunderstorms, Strong Winds and Widespread Rain Forecast Across North India
After weeks of scorching heat and oppressive humidity, the southwest monsoon has finally brought widespread rainfall to Delhi-NCR, providing much-needed relief while prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for parts of the national capital. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds lashed several areas on Thursday morning, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures and marking a significant change in weather conditions.
The IMD has warned that the current spell of rain may intensify over the coming days, with Delhi, Punjab and Haryana expected to witness widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds as the southwest monsoon advances across northwestern India. According to the weather department, favourable atmospheric conditions are enabling the monsoon to spread further into Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab during the next two days.
Meteorologists say the national capital is witnessing one of its latest monsoon onsets in the past five years. After a prolonged delay caused by weak monsoon progression and prevailing dry weather patterns, moisture-laden winds have finally reached the region, ending an extended spell of high temperatures and uncomfortable humidity.
Several parts of Delhi-NCR recorded moderate to heavy rainfall during the morning hours, while dark clouds, lightning and strong winds swept across the city. The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with intermittent rain and thunderstorms over the next several days. Wind speeds during thunderstorms could reach 40–60 kmph, with isolated gusts touching 80 kmph, increasing the risk of falling trees, power disruptions and traffic congestion.
Authorities have advised residents to remain indoors during severe thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter beneath trees, stay away from waterlogged areas and monitor official weather updates. The heavy rainfall is expected to improve air quality and lower daytime temperatures, but may also trigger urban flooding, waterlogging and delays in road and rail transport across Delhi-NCR.
The strengthening monsoon system is not limited to the capital. Punjab and Haryana are also expected to receive widespread rainfall over the next several days, bringing relief to farmers and helping improve soil moisture for the ongoing kharif sowing season. Agricultural experts believe sustained rainfall during early July will support paddy transplantation and other seasonal farming activities across north India.
Across the country, monsoon activity has intensified simultaneously in several states. Heavy rain has already disrupted normal life in parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra and Karnataka, with reports of landslides, waterlogging and transportation disruptions. The IMD continues to monitor multiple weather systems that are expected to keep monsoon conditions active across large parts of India during the first week of July.
With the southwest monsoon now advancing steadily across northern India, weather officials expect recurring spells of rain over Delhi-NCR during the coming days. While the rainfall is expected to provide long-awaited relief from the summer heat, authorities remain on alert for localized flooding, traffic disruptions and weather-related emergencies as the monsoon gains momentum.
