Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi Begins Landmark India Visit to Deepen Strategic Partnership
India and Japan look to strengthen defence, technology, energy, and supply chain cooperation as regional security concerns and China’s growing influence shape the agenda.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has arrived in New Delhi for a three-day official visit and the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit, marking her first bilateral visit to India since taking office. She was received by Union Minister Jitendra Singh before beginning a packed schedule of high-level diplomatic engagements.
Prime Minister Takaichi is scheduled to hold comprehensive talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with discussions expected to cover defence cooperation, trade, investment, critical technologies, semiconductor supply chains, energy security, and regional developments across the Indo-Pacific. The summit reflects the growing strategic convergence between Asia’s second- and fifth-largest economies.
A major focus of the summit is expected to be economic security. Both governments are working to diversify supply chains for critical minerals, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing while reducing dependence on concentrated global production networks. Cooperation in artificial intelligence, green energy, digital infrastructure, and innovation is also high on the agenda.
Energy cooperation is set to receive a significant boost, with India and Japan expected to sign a new Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) security agreement aimed at strengthening long-term energy resilience. The proposed pact comes amid continued uncertainty in global energy markets and is expected to support stable fuel supplies for both countries.
Security and defence cooperation remain another central pillar of the visit. India and Japan are expected to reaffirm their commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, enhance maritime security cooperation, expand defence exchanges, and deepen collaboration through the Quad, alongside the United States and Australia. While neither government has publicly framed the summit as being directed against any specific country, analysts say China’s growing military presence and strategic influence in the region provide important context for the strengthening partnership.
Economic ties between the two nations have expanded steadily over the past decade. Around 1,400 Japanese companies now operate in India, while Japanese investment continues to support major infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor. Bilateral trade has also grown significantly, with both governments seeking to attract additional investment in manufacturing and high-technology sectors.
The summit is also expected to review progress under the Japan–India Joint Vision for the Next Decade, with renewed emphasis on investment, innovation, resilient supply chains, and economic growth. Officials from both countries describe India as a key partner in Japan’s broader Indo-Pacific strategy and a vital destination for long-term Japanese investment.
Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit underscores the growing strategic importance of the India–Japan relationship at a time of shifting geopolitical dynamics in Asia. With both nations seeking stronger economic resilience, technological cooperation, and regional stability, the summit is expected to produce agreements that further elevate one of the Indo-Pacific’s most significant strategic partnerships.
