Death of Sushant Singh Rajput: Six Years Later, CBI Closure Report Continues to Fuel Legal and Public Debate

While the CBI concluded there was no evidence of foul play, the case remains one of India’s most discussed celebrity investigations, with legal proceedings and public scrutiny continuing.

The death of Sushant Singh Rajput continues to attract nationwide attention nearly six years after the acclaimed actor was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020. What began as a tragic incident evolved into one of India’s most high-profile criminal investigations, drawing intense media coverage, political debate, and widespread public interest.

In March 2025, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed closure reports after an investigation spanning more than four years. According to the agency, investigators found no evidence supporting allegations of foul play or criminal conspiracy in Rajput’s death. The probe relied on forensic analysis, expert opinions, witness statements, and digital evidence collected during the investigation.

The CBI’s findings also concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support allegations that actress Rhea Chakraborty or other individuals had abetted Rajput’s death or committed financial wrongdoing connected to the case. The closure report effectively gave a clean chit to those named in the FIR filed by Rajput’s family.

Despite the closure report, the matter has not completely faded from the legal landscape. Members of Rajput’s family have publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation’s conclusions and have described the closure report as incomplete. Their legal representatives have indicated that they intend to continue pursuing available legal remedies before the courts.

A Mumbai court has also dealt with procedural aspects arising from the CBI’s closure report, including seeking responses from parties connected with the investigation before deciding the next legal course. Such proceedings are part of the judicial process that follows the filing of a closure report and do not themselves determine criminal liability.

The case remains significant because it triggered investigations by multiple central agencies, including the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate, and the Narcotics Control Bureau, while simultaneously sparking national conversations about mental health, media ethics, celebrity privacy, and the conduct of criminal investigations in high-profile cases.

Even years after Rajput’s death, public interest remains strong, particularly around every judicial development. Supporters continue to commemorate his work and legacy, while legal proceedings related to the closure report may still shape the final judicial record of one of Bollywood’s most closely watched investigations.
