Monsoon Death Toll Rises Across India as Heavy Rains Trigger Floods, Landslides and Transport Chaos
Relentless monsoon rains continue to batter large parts of India, pushing the death toll higher as floods, landslides and infrastructure damage disrupt normal life across several states. Authorities remain on high alert with more heavy rainfall forecast in the coming days.
India’s southwest monsoon has intensified across western, central and Himalayan regions, leaving a trail of destruction as rain-related fatalities continue to mount. Maharashtra has emerged as one of the worst-hit states, while Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and parts of Odisha are also battling severe flooding and landslides.
In Maharashtra, officials reported at least 13 rain-related deaths over the past few days, with fresh fatalities linked to landslides, wall collapses and flash floods. Mumbai witnessed widespread waterlogging, disruption to suburban rail services and road traffic, while the state government conducted emergency reviews as heavy rainfall continued.
Pune has also been severely affected after recording exceptionally heavy rainfall. Authorities confirmed five deaths in two days, including casualties caused by a landslide, a wall collapse and a motorcyclist swept away by floodwaters. Schools and colleges were closed as rescue teams responded to multiple emergencies across the district.
In the Himalayan region, landslides and flash floods have caused significant damage to roads, bridges and public infrastructure. Himachal Pradesh has reported at least 14 deaths during the current spell, while several roads remain blocked and remote villages have been temporarily cut off from the rest of the state.
Heavy monsoon conditions have also affected neighboring states. Flooding and landslides have disrupted transport links in Jammu and Kashmir, while rescue and relief operations continue in vulnerable areas. Authorities have warned that saturated soil increases the risk of additional landslides even after rainfall subsides.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall alerts for several states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh. Meteorologists have warned that thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds and localized flooding are likely to continue over the next 24 hours due to an active monsoon system.
Emergency response agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state disaster management authorities, have intensified rescue operations, evacuated residents from vulnerable locations and appealed to people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Relief camps have been established in several flood-affected districts to accommodate displaced families.
Weather experts caution that while the southwest monsoon is essential for India’s agriculture and water resources, increasingly frequent episodes of extreme rainfall are amplifying the risks of urban flooding, landslides and infrastructure damage. With more rain forecast over the coming days, authorities remain on alert as efforts continue to protect lives, restore essential services and assist affected communities.
