Dawoodi Bohra Delegation Meets PM Modi, Welcomes Waqf Amendment Act
A delegation from the Dawoodi Bohra community met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 17, 2025, to express their gratitude for the recently enacted Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The community described the law as a long-pending demand and welcomed it as a crucial reform addressing their concerns about wrongful claims on their properties by Waqf boards.
The delegation, which included business leaders, professionals, and educators, thanked PM Modi for the Act, highlighting that it benefits not only minorities broadly but also the “minority within minorities,” referring to their community. They praised the Prime Minister’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” and expressed confidence in his leadership and inclusive development agenda.
The Dawoodi Bohra community traces its heritage to the Fatimid Imams and has a global presence in over 40 countries. Their leadership, the al-dai al-mutlaq, has been based in India for the past 450 years.
The community also acknowledged the Prime Minister’s efforts in addressing issues faced by women, especially widows, under the previous Waqf system. The delegation appreciated the government’s initiatives like Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, which support social welfare and empowerment.
The meeting was accompanied by Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. The community was represented during the parliamentary scrutiny of the bill by noted lawyer Harish Salve. The Act has faced opposition and is currently under review by the Supreme Court, which has temporarily suspended some provisions pending further hearings.
The Dawoodi Bohra delegation welcomed the Waqf Amendment Act as a significant and overdue reform that safeguards their property rights and supports their community’s development under PM Modi’s inclusive governance framework.
