Devotees Hospitalised After Crowd Surge During Puri Rath Yatra, Safety Measures Under Scrutiny
A massive crowd surge during the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odisha’s Puri left scores of devotees requiring medical attention, while at least two people lost their lives, according to the latest official reports. The incident occurred on the Grand Road (Bada Danda) as lakhs of pilgrims gathered to witness the sacred procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.
Authorities said the surge took place during the Pahandi ritual, when the deities are ceremonially carried from the Jagannath Temple to their chariots. Heavy rainfall, intense crowd pressure and congestion along the procession route reportedly created panic among devotees, leading to a stampede-like situation in which many people suffered suffocation, dehydration and minor injuries.
Emergency response teams, including ambulances, medical personnel and disaster response units stationed along the route, quickly moved in to rescue affected devotees. Dozens were administered first aid, oxygen support and intravenous fluids before being shifted to nearby hospitals for further treatment. Officials said most of those hospitalised were reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical care.
The Odisha Government has maintained that the incident was a temporary crowd surge rather than a full-scale stampede, though it acknowledged the casualties and injuries. Senior administrative and police officials have begun reviewing the sequence of events, while crowd-management protocols are expected to come under close examination.
The tragedy has renewed concerns over safety arrangements at one of India’s largest religious gatherings. The Puri Rath Yatra attracts millions of devotees every year, making crowd control one of the most significant logistical challenges for authorities. The latest incident has revived debate over the need for stronger surveillance, improved movement corridors, real-time crowd monitoring and enhanced emergency response systems, particularly as a similar tragedy during last year’s festival also claimed lives.
Political leaders and public figures have expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. Calls have also grown for a comprehensive inquiry into the incident to determine whether additional preventive measures could have reduced the risks associated with such a large gathering.
Despite the unfortunate incident, the Rath Yatra rituals continued under heightened security, with authorities appealing to devotees to remain calm, follow designated routes and cooperate with security personnel. Officials indicated that additional crowd-control measures would be implemented for the remaining events of the festival to ensure the safety of pilgrims.
