India to Send Syed Ata Hasnain to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s Funeral; Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Thanks PM Modi for Eid Greetings

India will send a high-level delegation led by Lt Gen (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain, Governor of Bihar, and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita to represent the country at the state funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, following a formal invitation from the Iranian government.

The diplomatic development comes as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, sent a personal message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing gratitude for his Eid al-Adha greetings and voicing confidence that India-Iran relations will continue to strengthen.

India Chooses Senior Delegation for State Funeral

According to Iranian and Indian diplomatic sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the funeral due to previously scheduled overseas engagements. Instead, India will be represented by:

  • Lt Gen (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain, Governor of Bihar
  • Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita

The delegation will participate in the multi-day funeral ceremonies scheduled from July 4 to July 9, reflecting India’s continued diplomatic engagement with Iran despite evolving geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Mojtaba Khamenei’s Message to PM Modi

In his first known direct correspondence with Prime Minister Modi since assuming Iran’s highest office, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei thanked the Indian Prime Minister for his Eid al-Adha greetings.

According to Iranian sources, Mojtaba wrote:

“I have received Your Excellency’s message of congratulations on the occasion of the blessed Eid al-Adha… I am confident that the historic friendship between our two countries, founded on mutual respect and shared interests, will continue to be further strengthened and expanded through the efforts of our two governments.”

He also prayed for the prosperity of India and wished continued success to its government and people.

Diplomatic Significance

The exchange highlights several important developments:

  • It marks the first formal communication between Prime Minister Modi and Iran’s new Supreme Leader.
  • India continues to maintain balanced diplomatic relations with Iran despite shifting regional dynamics.
  • Sending senior representatives instead of the Prime Minister follows established diplomatic practice while signaling respect for Iran’s leadership transition.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had formally invited Prime Minister Modi to attend the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. While Modi declined because of prior commitments, New Delhi decided to send a senior official delegation to represent India.

The funeral ceremonies are expected to draw foreign dignitaries and large public gatherings from across Iran and other countries.
